''No, you're not in the wrong place. That massive mural of Frank, Sammy, Deano and the rest of the Rat Pack is a relic of the space's former tenant, an Italian restaurant with throwback tastes. When Abyssinia's Ethiopian owners took over the spot, they liked the painted wall so much that they decided to keep it. In a way, it's just another unusual spice in a joint that's swimming in them. Few Kansas City restaurants smell more exotic and inviting than this one.
Those spices are used to flavor a wide range of beef, chicken, lamb and vegetable dishes. Some specialties are doro watt (chicken marinated in lemon with stewed red pepper), yebeg alicha watt (lamb simmered in ginger root, cardamom and other spices) and shrimp tibbs (which is sauteed with onion and garlic). Vegetarians will find plenty of nonmeat entrees, many of which are spicy takes on lentils or beans. Drinks include Ethiopian beers like Hakim and Harer, as well as Ethiopian honey wine. Diners not versed in Ethiopian cuisine should know in advance that there are no forks. Instead you use injera, a soft bread, to pick up and eat your food.
